Why Diet is Better than Douching

04.20.2021

There are a number of different preparation techniques people swear by prior to anal sex, some of which are more advisable than others. Some will starve themselves for hours, subsisting on ice chips until “DomTop4Now” arrives at their doorstep. Others will use a shower shot, blowing up their rectums like a balloon to make sure the area is cleaner than an operating room

Of course, neither of these strategies are advisable. Starvation is unhealthy and you’re going to need energy while bottoming, especially if they want you on top (not to mention knees like Megan Thee Stallion). And since shower hoses don’t typically regulate water pressure, you can easily use too much water and force, distending your rectum and potentially causing long-term damage to your precious bum.

What you ultimately want to do is consume a diet rich in fiber so your stool comes out in one solid, formed mass so that there’s less residue after a bowel movement. It’s the most natural way to clean the area and ensure the penis or toy is clear for landing. Of course, there’s more to it than eating lots of beans, nuts and berries, so that’s what we’re going to discuss. Consider this a lesson in anal sex prep.

Do you need to douche?

Absolutely not. People who douche have either been told that they need to, or they do so as an added measure to ensure they are completely clean. The fact of the matter is, unless you feel the need to go to the bathroom, there’s a good chance there won’t be any “mess” during anal sex since stool is actually stored in the area above the rectum, called the sigmoid colon. This area is roughly six to nine inches inside the bum and rarely accessed unless you engage in fisting or your partner or toy is exceptionally large

Most often any mess that occurs is residual from your last bowel movement. So provided you’ve defecated an hour prior to sex and rinse the area with a  gentle soap in the shower, you should be good to go.

Is douching bad for your body?

It can be. The majority of people douche improperly, using too much force or too much water. This is potentially dangerous, since douching strips the microbiome in the anus, which is imperative to its function, assisting in food digestion and stool formation. When one douches too often or aggressively, your body may be vulnerable to stomach and intestinal issues.

Water and saline solutions typically found in store-bought enemas irritate and traumatize cells in the anorectal region. It responds by creating excessive mucus, which causes dryness, leaving the area more susceptible to cuts and cracks, making STI and HIV easier to transmit. Not to mention, dryness is the last thing you want to happen when engaging in receptive anal sex since the area doesn’t lubricate like other orifices.

HOW TO BOTTOM: A How to Guide

We've put together a handy how-to guide for learning how to start bottoming.  Read More

What does fiber do?

Fiber helps mould your stool so bowel movements are bulky and pass through clean. There are two types of fiber: soluble (found in seeds, beans, lentils, most fruits and vegetables) and insoluble (found in brown rice, wheat bran, potatoes, etc.).

Soluble fiber absorbs water, which supports constipation and helps prevent things like hemorrhoids, whereas insoluble fiber does not absorb water, but signals the intestine to function more efficiently.

Both are essential to your diet though, generally speaking, you should try to limit foods with insoluble fiber a day or so before anal sex. Some ways you can do this is by switching to white rice instead of brown and peeling your vegetables since most vegetable skin is insoluble fiber whereas the “meat” is soluble.

Most people don’t get enough fiber in their diets, so supplements are a wise and recommended option. These can be purchased in capsule and/or powder form. Take two to three capsules or scoops daily with at least 16 oz of water. On that note, make sure you drink plenty of water (one to two litres a day) to help fiber flow in and out of your body.

It might take some time for your body to get used to more fiber, so it’s best to introduce slowly, increasing by roughly one serving every four to five days. Introducing fiber too quickly can have the opposite of the desired effect. If you’re on PrEP, take fiber roughly one to two hours before or after taking the pill, since psyllium can interfere with the absorption of some medications and nutrients.

The most natural and effective way to prepare for anal sex is to eat healthy and supplement with naturally occurring fibers. If you still feel the need to douche, do a “shallow douche” with a small douche bulb since most are way too large and squeeze gently. If you maintain a diet rich in fiber, the process will be quick and easy and, as mentioned prior, likely unnecessary.
